Welcome to our team page for the Walk to End Epilepsy!
Epilepsy is the world's most common, serious brain disorder, according to the World Health Organization. Seizures steal moments and memories, can change lives, impact development, affect learning and can even result in death. There is no cure.
I have lived with Epilepsy since I was four years old, however things really took a turn for the worse during both of my pregnancies. It's a long story, that many of you know and were involved in and I thank you so much for your friendship and support through that difficult time. Luckily, for me, there was a happy ending and thanks to my wonderful neurologist, Marisa Chang, and my fantastic husband, I have now been seizure free for almost four years. Additionally, because we were unable to have anymore children we decided to adopt and recently just brought home our beautiful daughter, Farrah Adele, from Africa. I am the first known woman with Epilepsy to adopt internationally from Congo! I guess it really is true that everything happens for a reason.
Recently too, my nephew Wyatt was diagnosed with Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy, which is what his auntie has as well. We have learned that this particular type of epilepsy is passed through a certain gene and that there is a high liklihood that Wyatt's brothers or Drew and Chase will carry the gene as well. We certainly hope that is not the case, however we are confident that with the current research and pediatric epileptologists now on the scene, whatever the outcome, our children will not only survive but prevail!
Seizures can strike suddenly and unexpectedly at any point in one?s life. Seizures steal moments and memories, can change lives, impact development, affect learning and can even result in early death.
About 360,000 Californians have epilepsy. About 24,000 more will be diagnosed in 2012. One could be you or someone you love.
For over fifty years, the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles has provided support to the nearly 160,000 individuals with epilepsy and their families in our region. The local Epilepsy Foundation chooses to fulfill its mission by leading the fight to END EPILEPSY and the burden of seizures by focusing on care, advocacy, research and education.
Your donation provides care, advocacy and education, today, while investing in research and hope for tomorrow.
Thank you for your support!
